Description
The Baikal Teal (Sibirionetta formosa) used to be put in the same genus, Anas, as the far more familiar and widely distributed Mallard (Anas platyrhynchos) but in 2009 a molecular phylogenetic study led to this species being put into a distinct genus, ahs had been proposed in 1929. The generic name drives from sibiricus, which is Latin for Siberia, and Netta, Ancient Greek for a “duck”. The species name, formosa, derives from the Latin formosus, meaning beautiful. Sadly, this beautiful Siberian duck is in decline in its native land of eastern Asia, including Lake Baikal, where it was once seen in vast flocks. It breeds in boreal forest wetlands and tundra. I was fortunate to encounter it wintering in Japan in a shallow pond whose bottom reflected an odd greenish hue that I tried to capture in the painting. Conservation can work and the good news is that this species is showing signs of recovery, I am pleased to say. It surely is one of the prettiest of any waterfowl. This painting is 18 X 24 inches and in acrylics on pre-gessoed and textured compressed hardboard with slots to allow hanging unframed. $750.00
