Description

This little study in oils derived from an afternoon sketching and photographing a female Hooded Merganser (Lophodytes cucullatus) guiding her brood around a pond near my home. While the male of the species is, in breeding plumage, very showy, the more subtle browns, grays and warm tan and brownish-russet tones of the female are very appealing to my eye. Either as a breeding species, during migration, or in winter, these small ducks can be seen in lakes, ponds and rivers at some time in most parts of North America south of arctic and subarctic regions.
