Description
The Painted Turtle (Chrysemys picta) is by far the most often encountered turtle here in southern Ontario. The species is found across North America, divided into four distinct populations called the Western, Midland, Eastern and Southern Painted Turtles. They hybridize where ranges overlap and within each population there can be considerable individual variations. I live in the middle of the range of the Midland Painted Turtle, which is what I have painted. The larger female can reach a length of about 25 cm (10 inches). The are fairly omnivorous, but include algae, which I decided to include in the painting, in their diets. They are ectothermic and often bask in the day, the temperature of their bodies dependent upon the temperature of the environment. They began to forage when water temperature reaches around 16o C. (ca 60o F.) but once it is above 30o C (86o F) it is too warm for them. The painting is acrylic on Russian birch mounted on a basswood frame painted black and ready to hang. $500.00
