Title
Double-crested Cormorants with Canada Goose
Artist
Barry Kent MacKay
Medium
Painting - Oil On Birch Panel
Description
This painting shows five Double-crested Cormorants (Phalacrocorax auritus) at a small wetland near my house, along with one Canada Goose (Branta canadensis). I have been observing cormorants since seeing my first, as a kid, in 1957, and the more I learn about them the more fascinating they become. My scene shows one bird in preening while holding the wings spread, a characteristic pose believed to facilitate drying the feathers since the birds produce less oil from their oil glands than do other aquatic birds, and must “haul out” to dry, periodically. This is an oil painting on a birchwood panel, mounted on a basswood frame, 24 by 30 inches.
