The Thick-billed Murre (Uria lomvia) is also known in most English speaking parts of the world outside of North America as the Brünnich's Guellemot, although the very darkly black-backed birds of the North Pacific are called the Pallas’ Murre. Most of its breeding range is above the arctic circle, and the species spends its life feeding from seas no more than 8o Celsius (46.4F). They nest in vast colonies on cliff ledges overlooking the sea, each bird requiring no more than a square foot of space to lay a single egg and raise a chick with both parents taking part in incubation and feeding the chick. This approximately life size painting of a tiny part of a Thick-billed Murre nesting colony is in oils on birch panel and measures and is 16 by 24 inches.
