The Spectacled Bear (Tremarctos ornatus), also commonly called the Andean Bear, is the only bear native to South America, and is the last remaining member of the subfamily that the short-faced bears of the last ice age belong to. It is listed as “vulnerable” to endangerment, and is found rarely as far north as Panama, being found in the northwestern region of Colombia south through Ecuador to Peru and east as far as the Bolivian Andes. The light markings on the face vary enormously, with no two bears alike, and sometimes partly or wholly encircle the eyes, hence the name, “spectacled”. Mostly herbivorous, the species, while protected by law, is threatened by poachers, farmers who consider it a nuisance species, and habitat loss.
