Artist's Description

The medium-sized Lanner Falcon (Falcon biarmicus) is distributed through much of Africa, apart from the Sahara Desert and the Congo Basin, and in some parts of southern Europe. Like most birds of prey, Lanner Falcons are quite variable in appearance. I have shown an adult male. They bear a strong resemblance, and are apparently quite closely related, to several of the medium-large and largest falcons, including the Lagger Falcon (F. jugger) of southern Asia, the Saker Falcon (F. cherrug) of Eurasia and Africa, and our own North American Prairie Falcon (F. mexicanus) and several other species. In captivity hybrids among these and other various falcon species are commonplace. Five subspecies of Lanner are recognized; I've shown a male of the nominate race, from Angola. The painting is approximately life size, on a Russian birch panel that is 18 X 24 inches, mounted on a basswood frame, and is done in acrylics on a gesso base. $1,000.

About Barry Kent MacKay

Barry Kent MacKay

Renowned Canadian bird artist, writer, naturalist, and conservationist, Barry Kent MacKay has “always been an admirer of birds, anxious to see them, paint them, and care for them.” Barry’s biological and ecological accuracy has put him in demand for commissions, to illustrate books, scientific journals and various print and digital media. He has painted birds and other wildlife from around the world, often life size, working in oils, watercolours, and acrylics. He prefers to sell original art, and keeps prices low. “Actual, original art should be affordable for middle class buyers,” he says. “I avoid having to depend on selling reproductions so that the market does not dictate what I paint, which can often be little-known...
