Title
Herring Full on Lake Erie
Artist
Barry Kent MacKay
Medium
Painting - Oil On Birch-wood Panel
Description
This is the North American subspecies of the Herring Gull (Larus argentatus smithsonianus), which some experts consider to be conspecific with the Herring Gulls of Eurasia, while others consider them to be separate species. Whatever they are, they normally nest near water, often on islands, and normally lay three eggs in a simple scrape on the ground, or sometimes among rocks or driftwood, roughly lined with a bit of vegetation, feathers and so on, and rather messy looking. The painting is in oils, on a birchwood panel and is 12 X 16 inches.
