This is an approximately life sized painting of the east coast subspecies of the Willet (Tringa semipalmata semipalmata), which nests from southern Newfoundland south to the Gulf of Mexico and West Indies. Interior and west coast birds (T. s. inorta) are plainer in color. Some scientists believe they should be treated as a separate species and birders often refer to them as Eastern Willets and Western Willets. I have shown an adult, from Nova Scotia, with a partly grown chick. When these rather plainly marked birds spread their wings, they flash a bold black and white wing pattern, hidden from view when the wings are closed. The painting is in acrylics on birch panel mounted on a basswood frame behind and is 20 X 16 inches.
