Description
The Barnacle Goose (Branta leucopsis) is native to the North Atlantic regions of the eastern hemisphere, normally breeding from Greenland east as far as the Novaya Zemlya archipelago, off the north-west arctic shoreline of Russia, and as far south as parts of the UK and the Netherlands in coastal central Europe. It was once thought these birds (and the closely related brant geese) were hatched from barnacles. Even more absurd, Catholics were allowed to eat the bird during Lent since it was classified as a fish! The odd one does show up in North America, and I have painted such a bird with Canada Geese (B. canadensis) in the background, although this could still be a European scene as Canada’s are now a well-established species in the Barnacle’s European wintering grounds. Acrylic on compressed hardboard 20 X 16 inches.
