Description
A majestic bald eagle is perched prominently on a thick branch, surveying his surroundings with keen eyes. Surrounded by pine needles and branches, the eagle's striking white head and tail contrast with his dark, chocolate-brown feathers and the hazy background. The species is found throughout most of North America, from the treeline south into central Mexico. Healthy birds tip the scales at between 3 and 6.3 kg (about 6 ½ to 14 lbs) with females being about 25% larger than the males. I have shown a male of the northern subspecies, H. l. washingtoniensis.
