Description
The endangered African Grey Parrot (Psittacus erithacus) is sometimes called the Congo Grey or the Congo African Grey Parrot to distinguish it from the slightly smaller, darker Timneh Parrot (P. timneh), an endangered species found in West Africa. The normal coloring is gray with a whitish face, black beak, and rather bright red tail. It is hugely popular as a pet which has led to a reduction of wild populations to the point where the species is fully protected in the wild, and yet poachers still hunt for them. A majority of such birds die, often painfully from the stress of being stuffed in objects to hide them from custom’s authorities. Legal or illegal the trade is not sustainable, and both the grey parrots are protected under Appendix I of the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species (CITES), prohibiting international trade for primarily commercial purposes. There is a large population of captive African Grey Parrots, including some that show strange color mutations (including some that are partly or mostly red) but the demand for new genetic strains fuels an active illegal take of wild birds. Not only are they attractive and very intelligent both African grey species are among the best mimics among parrots and can learn to not only imitate the human voice, but even use words in appropriate circumstances, and show understanding of human language by following commands. But these parrots are potentially long lived, messy, can be noisy and destructive, and sadly more are sold than are ultimately wanted and many are kept under less than ideal conditions, leading to stress aberrant behaviour, including a form of self-mutilation called feather-plucking. This painting of a wild bird is approximately 15 by 20 inches in acrylics on compressed hardboard. $1000.00. Sold
