White-faced Whistling Duck (Dendrocygna viduata)
Because I am fascinated by how birds across a wide range of species often rest balancing on one foot, I sometimes portray such behavior. But I was especially surprised when watching a group of White-faced Whistling Ducks at rest in the London Zoo, several on one leg, when one very calmly reached down for a sip of water without putting the other foot down to balance himself (or herself; sexes are coloured the same as is typical of tropical ducks, but rarer among migratory ducks of the higher latitudes.) I had my idea for this painting, a group of birds more or less resting by the edge of the water, some alert, some drowsy, some on one foot, one of whom is taking a sip. The species is found throughout a wide area of South America, and through a massive region of sub-Sahel Africa, including Madagascar. The birds from the two continents appear to be genetically identical. The painting is in oils on compressed wood panel and is 18 by 2...
