The Spotted Owl (Strix occidentalis) is native to western North America, from southern British Columbia, where it is nearly extirpated, down to just a few individuals, deep into western Mexico. They are an endangered species in the north and in Mexico, critically so in Canada, with a very low reproduction rate, and they are famous for requiring old growth forests, which has pitted conservationists against the forest and cattle industry. There are three subspecies, and in this painting, I have shown the northernmost one, S. o. caurina, the “Northern” Spotted Owl. The painting is life size, in oils on compressed hardboard.16 X 30 inches.
