Description
This little vignette watercolour is a study of the Social Flycatcher (Myiozetetes similis), found from southern Mexico south deep into South America. Sometimes the northern form, shown here, is considered different from those found from southern Central America south through South America, in which case the southern ones are called the Vermilion-crowned Flycatcher, and the scientific name of the northern bird becomes M. texensis. Weighing about 24 to 27 grams, less than an ounce, they are medium-small members of the Tyrant Flycatcher family, Tyrannidae, found only in the western hemisphere. They are common, and can live in second growth, parks, plantations and open woodlands. The study is in watercolours on paper, 10 by 8 inches.
