Artist's Description

When I paint a bird, I seek to satisfy only one person, the boy I used to be, besotted with birds, burning with a desire to travel, and to be an artist in the tradition of the illustrators of the books I so cherished, and to be able to paint the exotic birds I would one day see. I think he would have liked this one. The painting is 22.5 by 13.75 inches, and is painted on the back of a kitchen cupboard door made of compressed wood fiber. When the kitchen was recently renovated, I was seeing breaks in supply chains for art supplies because of the pandemic. When I saw all the kitchen cupboard doors removed and ready to be taken to landfill, I decided to save those I could use to paint on. They’re heavy and solid. Fortunately the birch panels or compressed hardboard I normally use for oil paintings are returning to the art store.

About Barry Kent MacKay

Barry Kent MacKay

Renowned Canadian bird artist, writer, naturalist, and conservationist, Barry Kent MacKay has “always been an admirer of birds, anxious to see them, paint them, and care for them.” Barry’s biological and ecological accuracy has put him in demand for commissions, to illustrate books, scientific journals and various print and digital media. He has painted birds and other wildlife from around the world, often life size, working in oils, watercolours, and acrylics. He prefers to sell original art, and keeps prices low. “Actual, original art should be affordable for middle class buyers,” he says. “I avoid having to depend on selling reproductions so that the market does not dictate what I paint, which can often be little-known...
