The Roseate Spoonbill (Platalea ajaja), which formerly had the double-barreled scientific name, Ajaja ajaja, seen in older references, is found from the southeastern U.S., south, through mostly coastal regions of much of the West Indies, Central and South America. The pinkness of the plumage, because it is derived from ingestion of carotenoid pigments found in crustaceans, varies according not only to age and breeding condition, but diet. They feed with sweeping motions, straining water out of the flattened, paddle-like beak and swallowing small organisms such as crustaceans; very small fish, reptiles and amphibians; and aquatic insects. This painting, approximately life size, is in oils on a compressed wood panel that is about 30 X 24 inches. $900.00
Renowned Canadian bird artist, writer, naturalist, and conservationist, Barry Kent MacKay has “always been an admirer of birds, anxious to see them, paint them, and care for them.” Barry’s biological and ecological accuracy has put him in demand for commissions, to illustrate books, scientific journals and various print and digital media. He has painted birds and other wildlife from around the world, often life size, working in oils, watercolours, and acrylics. Thanks so much. You know, I never quite think of myself as a realist, even though I know that is the proper technical term. So many artists these days copy digital photos, and may or may not do some tricky thing like blur or airbrush a background or add some special effects...but I'm very old school...not necessarily as good at it as I'd like to be, but my backgrounds are made up, the birds ornithologically correct, I hope...but not hyper-detailed. The spoonbills were both fun, and a challenge, to paint.
