Description
The Ridgway’s Hawk (Buteo ridgwayi) is found only on the large Caribbean island of Hispaniola, shared by two countries, Haiti and the Dominican Republic. Sadly, Ridgway’s Hawk is critically endangered, nearly wiped out by the deadly combination of direct persecution and habitat destruction. While peasant landholders understandably fear it may prey on small livestock, such as poultry, or compete for “game” species, such as doves, it is more likely to consume reptiles, which may constitute up to 90 percent of its diet, although it certainly can take small birds or mammals, including mice and rats. The last of these handsome hawks are apparently restricted to Haitises National Park, in the Dominican Republic, where they are legally protected. There are probably around 100 birds left. The species was named after the American ornithologist, who was also a bird artist and illustrator, Robert Ridgway (1850 – 1929). The painting is approximately life-size. It is 24 X 18 inches, in acrylics on pre-gessoed compressed hardboard. $1200. Sold.
