Description
The Reddish Egret (Egretta rufescens) is found from the extreme south eastern U.S., including the Texas coast where it is listed as a threatened species, south through parts of the West Indies, Mexico and Central America as far as the north coast of South America. After nesting the birds often disperse over a wider area. One young bird even made it as far north as Ontario, and is the subject of my painting. I showed it as it appeared during its visit of several weeks, molting from the rather drab overall grey colour of the younger birds into the adult plumage that includes a purplish-red head and neck that gives the bird its name, and a blue-grey body. Reddish Egrets also have a white “morph” that consists of pure white plumage, thus is more typical of egrets. The species if famous for its habit of prancing about in shallow water, folding and unfolding its broad wings, to chase fish into view. As is typical of fellow members of the heron family the Reddish Egret eats small fish, reptiles, amphibians, large aquatic insects and any other animal it sees in the water that it can catch and swallow. This painting is 16 by 20 inches and painted in acrylics on compressed hardboard.
