Description
The Porbeagle (Lamna nasus) is an endangered shark species found in the North Atlantic, and in the southern oceans. It can be up to 2.5 meters (over eight feet) in length and weighs up to 135 kg (nearly 300 lbs), so is not large, nor considered to be dangerous to human. While sometimes solitary, it can be gregarious, and even apparently playful behavior has been noted for this species. Notwithstanding its somewhat dumpy appearance, they can be fast moving and active. They have a low reproduction rate, a female usually having four pups per year, and commercial fishing has reduced the numbers of the species to vulnerable status worldwide, with some populations listed as either endangered or critically endangered. Unfortunately, they are still caught, legally, illegally, and as a “bycatch” of other species. They are absent from warmer, tropical waters and replaced in the North Pacific by the closely related Salmon Shark (L. ditropis). The painting is in acrylics on textured, pre-gessoed hardboard and is 18 X 24 inches. $490.00.
