My main subject in this little study is the Parasitic Jaeger (Stercorarius parasticus), also known as the Parasitic Skua, Arctic Skua, or Arctic Jaeger. It is a Holarctic species, nesting far north into the High Arctic (reaching well above the arctic circle) south as far as the coasts of Hudson Bay in North America. The year is 1846 and in the background can be seen the flagship, HMS Terror, of the Franklin expedition, which left England in 1845 to search for the Northwest Passage, accompanied by HMS Erebus. Both ships and all aboard failed to survive. The painting is in oils on compressed hardboard and is 20 by 16 inches.
