Description
The Northern Shoveler (Spatula clypeata), is commonly found through much of the subarctic regions of the Northern Hemisphere. But there is a male Blue-winged Teal (S. discors), native to the western hemisphere, behind them, so this is a North American scene showing what I witnessed at Lynde Shores Conservation Area, east of Toronto. I was admiring how, having the sun at my back, I could see the full brightness of a pair of Northern Shovelers directly in front of me. But as I peered through my binoculars another male calmly swam into view, directly in front of the pair, and the male of the pair sort of half reared back as if to say, “excuse me!” as the intruder calmly passed by, quite indifferent, as was the female. The whole thing lasted only a second and I scribbled a quick sketch from memory. There were Blue-winged Teal in the background, but I took the liberty of compressing the scene and putting everyone even closer to each other than they were. The painting is 18 by 24 inches in oils on compressed fiberboard.
