Artist's Description
The Northern Harrier (Circus hudsonius) was called the Marsh Hawk when I was a kid, and as I have shown in my little painting, it does tend to fly low over marshes and wetlands, as well as fields, prairies and hedgerows. But harriers are a distinct group of raptors of which this is the only one found in North America, where it occurs almost everywhere south of the treeline, migrating to winter in the southern and central U.S. to as far south as Central America, returning early in the spring. It eats a wide range of small animals. In flight, it wavers about, usually holding its wings in a āVā shape, and shows a white rump patch. I have shown an adult male in this painting.
