The Lesser Scaup (Aythya affinis) is a favourite duck of mine to sketch and paint even though in the field sometimes am not sure that I can identify it. That is because it is so similar to the slightly larger Greater Scaup (A. marila). Even the great ornithologist-artist John James Audubon failed to notice that there were these two, distinct species in North America. The very closely related Greater Scaup is found across the northern hemisphere, but the Lesser is entirely native to the western hemisphere, where it breeds in boreal forest wetlands from Alaska east as far as the Great Lakes region and south into the northwestern continental U.S. In winter the species can be found in open water from the southern part of the breeding range, including the lower Great Lakes where I so often see it, south as far as southern Central America and the West Indies.
