Description
The Lagger Falcon (Falco jugger) is a medium-sized falcon from the middle east and southern Asia. They used to be relatively common, but have suffered serious declines in much of their range. Like other birds of prey from the region they have suffered from use of toxic pesticides and other toxins in the environment, but they have, like other large falcon species, been reduced by the demands of poorly or unregulated falconry, often used as decoys to attract larger, more desired species. I have shown the bird with an Indian Cat Snake as prey. Snakes are an important prey species, and I have shown a bird in a partial “mantling” position, a behavior used both by falcons and by unrelated other avian raptors thought to be used to hide the prey from the view of other raptors in the air. The painting is 30 X 20 inches life-size, and is in acrylics on birch panel mounted on a basswood frame. $900.00. Sold.
