The Keel-billed Toucan (Ramphastos sulfuratus) is also known as the Sulphur-breasted Toucan or the Rainbow-billed Toucan. All 34 species of toucans, toucanets and aracaris have laterally compressed beaks that are roughly keel-shaped, like part of an upside0down canoe, and are usually brightly colored in bold patterns. This is the most northern-occurring species, ranging from south-eastern Mexico as far south as northern South America. It likes the jungle, including lowland forest, coffee plantations (especially shade-grown coffee), and mangroves, open pastures, and fruit orchards. These birds enjoy eating fruits of many kinds, including palm fruits, as well as large insects, and small vertebrate animals, such as snakes and lizards and baby birds and even small mammals. Like many neotropical species, it has been known to follow swarming army ant columns, catching the small animals that are chased up by the ants.
