Description
The Hooded Vulture (Necrosyrtes monachus) is the only member of its genus and is one of the Old World vultures that are related to eagles and hawks, and not to the superficially similar but very different New World vultures and condors. Hooded Vultures are small scavengers weighing about 1.5 to 2.5 kg (approximately 3 to 5 ½ pounds). They are found throughout much of Africa south if the Sahara. I did this little portrait in oils in 2007, and stored it away until now, and in that interim, apart from in The Gambia where the population is doing well, they have undergone range decreases between 64 and 93%, and this year the IUCN listed the species as “critically endangered”, reminding me of this portrait and so I decided to finally put it on the market. Causes of endangerment include the poisoning of carcases to kill predatory animals, the poisoning of waterholes by poachers to kill elephants for their ivory, collisions with power lines, hunting and degradation of habitat that reduces wildlife overall, thus sources of food, overall. They are killed for use in traditional medicines, with some people thinking consumption of parts of the birds are good for spiritual healing or bringing good luck, and smoked vulture meat is popular, even in international trade. Since Hooded Vultures are least fearful of humans they are often persecuted. This little painting is 8 X 10 inches and is in oils on compressed hardboard.
