Painting - Oil On Compressed Hardboard
Description
The Hawaiian Hawk (Buteo solitarius), known in Hawaiian as the `Io, is found only in Hawaii, where it used to be distributed on several islands, but is now a threatened species breeding in the wild only on the big island of Hawaii, although it is captive bred in various other locations. This painting is quickly done, really more of a study than a final painting, based on my sketching and drawing at birds kept in the Memphis Zoo in Tennessee. While fully protected, the main threats to its survival are shooting, poisoning, loss of habitat, being hit by cars, predation by non-native animals and lack of viable prey leading to starvation. The painting is in oils on compressed hardboard and is 20 by 16 inches. Because this is a rough study I'm happy to sell it for a nominal amount
