Artist's Description
This life-size acrylic painting shows a favourite species of mine, the Gray Catbird (Dumetalla carolinensis), whose scientific name translates to something like “a small thorny thicket dweller from the Carolinas”, although its range includes most of temperate North America, eastern Mexico, Central America and part of the West Indies. It is a common bird overlooked by most people, but entertainingly alert, curious and vocal, and related to the thrashers and mockingbirds in the family, Mimidae. Catbird have a mewing call that sounds like a cat, hence the common name. The painting is approximately life-size.
