The Glaucous-winged Gull (Larus glaucescens) is usually the most common “seagull” seen along North America’s west coast from Washington State northward, distinguished as being large, and, when in adult plumage, white with a grey mantle. Moving south one starts to encounter the closely related Western Gull (L. occidentalis), which has a very dark grey, almost black back, but where they come together they regularly hybridize. Hybrids are known as Olympic Gulls. They also will occasionally hybridize with American Herring Gull (L. (argentatus) smithsonianus). There are experts who delight in figuring all all the permutations of hybrids among these three species and others, pouring over minutiae of wing tips and beak colour and so on, but I am not one of them. It’s all very confusing. And yet I love to paint gulls! This one is an adult in winter plumage. The painting is in oils, on compressed hardboard, 24 X 18 inches. $500.00. Sold
