Medium
Painting - Acrylic On Compressed Hardboard
Description
I encountered the Band-rumped Storm Petrel (Oceanodromoa castro) in the Galapagos Islands, decades ago, the first species of Storm Petrel I ever saw, or held in my hand. Upon returning home, I did a painting of a bird on the water, with another above it, in flight. I was not happy with the results and literally had the painting cut into two parts, each of which I think turned out better than the whole. Seabird taxonomy and nomenclature is in a state of confusion, and this species has now been “split” into two, based on genetic analysis of mitochondria DNA and vocalizations. The other speces is the Monteiro’s Storm-Petro (O. monteiroi) which breeds only on a few islets in the Azores Islands, and is physically identical to the Band-rumped, but has a different voice, does not migrate, breeds at a different season and exhibits a few other minor differences. Acrylic on compressed hardboard, 7 X 15 inches. $200.00.
