The American Pygmy Kingfisher (Chlorocervle aenea) is the western hemisphere’s smallest kingfisher, weighing around 10 to 16 grams (around half an ounce) and only about five inches long. They often sit quietly above a stream or river and then plunge in after a tiny fish, tadpole or aquatic insect, or may even catch insects on the wing.
