Description
This painting of an American Oystercatcher (Haematopus palliatus) was painted after seeing a pair with four chicks on a white sand beach on the U.S. Gulf coast. Usually they have two chicks but can have from one to four. Strictly a shoreline species they bread on the southeastern and Gulf coast of the U.S., and along coastlines of Mexico, and parts of both coasts of South America. They feed on shellfish, prying open or breaking into mollusks, including small oysters, with their big beaks, as well as on crabs, starfish, sea urchins and other marine invertebrates. The painting is in acrylics on compressed hardboard and is 18 X 24 inches.
