A Pair of Mississippi Kites
Artist
Barry Kent MacKay
Medium
Painting - Acrylic On Compressed Hardboard
Description
Mississippi Kite (Ictinia mississippiensis)
Few birds of prey are more elegant in appearance than the Mississippi Kite, found from the south-central regions of the eastern U.S., south into South America. Each year a few individuals make it as far north as Ontario. I actually saw my first one in Mississippi, but the species seems to be expanding its range northward. This painting was used a cover on a scientific journal in 2011, and shows a pair. Their prey includes large insects, such as cicadas, often captured in midair. They will also take small, vertebrate animals such as mice, small birds, lizards and so on. The painting is in acrylics on compressed hardboard, 20 by 15 inches. $900.00. Sold.
